Description
This is one hour of the Masterclass scene study, on a scene from Proof, cut into five lessons. You watch the scene, you watch me coach it, and you see the moments where the two actors make it come off the page, and the moments where we stop and go again until it’s right.
The five lessons
- Questioning. Pay attention to the specific questions I ask to get to the bottom of the play’s subtext. The questions are the coaching.
- Slow play. Slowing down and listening. Every good play has music in it, and you’ll see how a silence can get a laugh that rushing into the line never would.
- Find the line. Getting deeper into the scene. Your job is to be truthful and become the person; stay connected to every moment and let the lines come. The second you get caught acting, the audience leaves.
- Use the digs. These two characters are confrontational on the page, and the truth is they’re both trying to love each other. When that fails, the writer adds the digs and the attacks to show it landed. You have to fall in love with your character to play that.
- End critique. Final thoughts and the homework before they come back Saturday, and both actors on what changed for them since they walked in.
What Masterclass is
Masterclass is the deepest work we do: scene study on a real play for months, with no guarantee of getting through it. Frank Caliendo, Sofia Wylie and Asher Angel have trained in this building, and the coaching is the same for everyone in it: listen at the highest level to everything in the scene, and ask the question that points the actor at the answer. The actors in it come to get one percent better. If that sounds like you, the live version is on the Masterclass page. Buy this course once and it’s yours.
