Description
Subtext is what the character means underneath the line, and finding it is one of the hardest parts of the job. This course is my coaching of one scene from Doubt in the Masterclass scene study, and you’ll see the scene change in front of you as the actors start playing what’s under the words instead of the words.
What subtext is
Take the context of the scene, add everything you know about the character and where they are right now, and you find what they actually mean when they say the line. The writer wrote the line for a reason. Your job is to find the character’s real feeling and let it out through the dialogue you were given, without changing a word.
