Description

A monologue is the piece you’ll be asked for more than any other, and most actors work on it backwards: they perform it first and understand it later. This course is five lessons in the order that works.

The five lessons

  • Memorize the right way. Cold, with no inflection baked in, so you can make discoveries as the character instead of repeating a tone you settled on the first day. There’s a post on the site about exactly how.
  • Connection and physicality. You can’t bring the words to life without a grounded connection to the person saying them. Body, breath and feeling go in before the delivery does.
  • Thought life. The most important part: what is this person thinking, and how do those thoughts change what they say? Make the choices on purpose and the delivery becomes truthful and strong.
  • Build the character. The atmosphere, the environment, the life around the words. This is where the artistry is.
  • Be directable. Which means being willing to throw the backstory away and start again when a director asks. Welcome the new idea. The actors who work are the ones who can change.

Do these five for every monologue and you’ll find they’re the same five steps for every character you ever play. Buy it once and it’s yours.
