Getting Work as an Actor: What’s the Secret?

There’s one way to be successful as an actor and that is to actually WORK AS AN ACTOR. We often hear things like “Oh I’m not working, I don’t have enough jobs, I’m not doing my thing.” Our response is always the same. What are you doing every day to get better?

FORGET ABOUT THE PAST, FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

A lot of people are spending time on Facebook and Instagram. They’re putting up photos of themselves, they’re talking about their last audition for about three weeks. My question is, what are you doing the second after your audition. You should forget about that audition you should be working on the next thing if you’re not waking up every day hours before your other job to work on this job your acting job then acting is not your profession.

START WORKING TO BECOME AN ACTOR.

Acting can be your profession right now if you treat it like a job. It’s got to be a side hustle. You have to be willing to after you’re done with your job, take a break, have dinner, kiss the kids goodnight and then go to work.

You should be reading plays and working monologues. Why are you not reading four plays a month? You should work four monologues every single month. It’s not that hard, it’s a choice. Imagine if you did that? If you were the only person that did that in the next two years, You’re gonna be better than everybody else at acting. They can’t cast you that way. So if you want to work as an actor start working to become an actor.

COUNT THE HOURS

In our day you get 24 hours in a day. So you’re gonna sleep maybe what eight hours okay good for you sleep six you get an extra two hours so it depends on your sleep schedule and what you need.I’m not gonna tell you what you can and cannot do when it comes to sleep. You get 24 hours in the day. Let’s say you are going to take eight hours, that leaves you with 16 hours left in the day. Let’s say you’re in a 9 to 5 day job that takes you eight hours a day five days a week. That leaves you a whole eight hours a day five days a week for a total of forty hours that you’re awake what during the week day. Then on the weekend you gain another 16 when you aren’t working. That total is 56 hours a week were you have the opportunity to work on your craft. What are you going to do with that time? Are you going to become a better actor?

SCHEDULE YOUR TIME

You have to use this knowledge of time to schedule all the hours in your day. You have to schedule every hour and then you have to hold yourself accountable. You have to look back on that schedule and see what did I do? What did I not do? The difference between people who make it and are massively successful are the people who are willing to grind. Who are willing to work more than everybody else.

The acting industry is a really cool, awesome profession that everybody wants to do. So guess what? Who’s your competition, the world. That means you have to rise up. You have to compete against you every single day. If you’re not doing that there’s no way you’re gonna make it. These dreams you have are not gonna come true if you’re not grinding every single day. So, get out there and get to work.
