Reprogram Your Mind: Where Limiting Beliefs Come From, Becoming a Master Programmer, and Starving the Virus

Reprogram Your Mind, an episode of the Dearing Acting Studio Podcast

We started six minutes late because I unplugged Joey’s computer, which is its own lesson. Two verses: do not be conformed to this world, but be renewed in your mind, that by testing you may discern the will of God; and put off your old self, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Read that second one again and notice it’s daily. The old self was yesterday. Then three sections: where limiting beliefs come from, how to become a master programmer, and feeding the good and starving the bad.

How do you reprogram your mind?

Start by admitting you’ve been programmed. A child who hits the dog with a stick gets told don’t, that hurt him, or gets laughed at and praised, and either way a program is written. Childhood, the news, television, movies: most of what runs in your head you never chose, and you can’t rewrite a program you’re not willing to question. So question it. Aristotle said an educated mind can entertain a thought without accepting it; that’s the skill. Then plant what you want, on purpose: whatever you put in your subconscious and nourish with repetition and emotion becomes real, so repeat the good until it runs on its own. And starve the bad. A negative thought works like a computer virus, planted where you can’t see it, running behind the scenes, throwing pop-ups when you least expect them. Bring it to the surface, find the root, take it in for repair when it’s too big for you, and put up a firewall so the next one has to get past something.

What is in the episode

  • 02:20 · Be renewed in your mind. Romans 12:2. The world has a bazooka on auto-fire, and discernment is asking one question: is this from God or not?
  • 06:10 · Put off your old self. Ephesians 4:22-24. No starting point without honesty about who you’ve been, and the realization that this is daily. The old self was yesterday.
  • 10:49 · Reflection, not guilt. Where was I culpable yesterday? Pray on it, be renewed. Guilt is a different program.
  • 12:23 · The stick and the dog. Two parents, two programs, same kid. Be careful which cookies you give yourself.
  • 15:29 · What everybody really wants. Childhood programming, news, television, movies, God’s programming. Peace when your head hits the pillow.
  • 20:13 · Where limiting beliefs come from. A seven-year-old told me he wasn’t smart. I told him he wasn’t allowed to say that, and watched him find out it wasn’t true.
  • 23:20 · Master your life through the craft of acting. Opening an acting studio in Arizona is not how you get rich. Why we went against the norm and stayed.
  • 24:50 · The kid on the stack of chairs. He wouldn’t come down until someone answered why. Reprogramming is understanding why something matters, and then he’ll defend it.
  • 28:00 · Brian’s limiting belief. I’m not smart, because of no college and old choices. And what he’s told himself about what he can accomplish.
  • 31:02 · What is smart? Harvard degrees on TV that I wouldn’t have coffee with. Compare you to you, and the emotional IQ that’s off the charts.
  • 32:35 · Basketball IQ. The extra rebound, the extra pass, the annoying defender. Smart in one field says nothing about another.
  • 34:09 · Entertain a thought without accepting it. Aristotle. Don’t judge a person until you’ve met them; you’re usually five people removed from the truth.
  • 35:39 · Focus on what you desire, not what you fear. Brian Tracy. Where your eyes go, you go.
  • 37:09 · Question the program. You may program, reprogram and reprogram again. That’s fine. But you have to look at it honestly.
  • 40:09 · Whatever we plant and nourish with repetition. Earl Nightingale. The toothbrush I had to relearn after thirty years, and why you should look ahead at what a program will do.
  • 43:20 · I wonder if. Experiment. Build a program for your life, take accountability for where you are, and put the good things on autopilot.
  • 44:51 · We tell ourselves it’s hard. The Stoics, and the baker’s bread you’d never settle for, until three weeks of hunger. Test the program.
  • 46:28 · Win in your mind first. John Addison. Define what you actually want under the money, and program the joy of being alive right now.
  • 50:58 · Pretend you’ve got a gig. Brian’s note during the break, and why repeating what worked is the whole idea.
  • 52:29 · The virus. Napoleon Hill, Roy Bennett, and a negative thought that plants itself where you can’t see it and runs behind the scenes.
  • 55:29 · Bring it to the surface. Bury it and it infects everyone around you. Sometimes the fix is turning it off and on: a walk into the cold on purpose.
  • 56:59 · Find the root, or take it in for repair. Classes, a trainer, a therapist. A good coach won’t let you say I can’t. Can’t is can with a t.
  • 58:30 · Firewalls. Don’t think you’re immune to the next one. Know what your protection is and what triggers it.
  • 60:03 · Clean the code. Why programs get faster and why updates exist. Refine yesterday, get better today, and double down on what you know is good.
  • 61:40 · Windows on a Mac. Question yourself without the guilt, and stop trying to run other people’s software on your machine.

What this has to do with the class

Most of what we do in a class is reprogramming. Someone walks in believing they can’t be seen, or can’t be funny, or can’t remember lines, and the room gives them repetitions until the new program runs on its own. It’s the same for a seven-year-old and a fifty-year-old, and we don’t dumb it down for either.

i think this is a good note for everybody out there I can't hear anything through my handphone. Oh, well, we're rolling. What's happening? Oh, there we go. This is Mornings with Matt. The Dearing Acting Studio podcast, where we discuss the connection between life and acting. We're still doing this? Yeah, we're going. You still got to do the intro, Doc. We're going. All right, good morning, everybody. Welcome to Good Mornings with Matt on the Dearing Acting Studio website.

Today, we're talking about reprogramming your mind. We started about six minutes late, my bad. I unplugged Joey's computer to plug mine in. I don't know if it was my fault or not, but something's got reset, and we're starting over. So, here we go. But we're here. And we're trying to keep a positive attitude, right, Joey? Right. Let me see that. Let me see the camera on you.

Let me see if you've made it back to goodness. No, not yet. Not yet. He's working on it. He's working on it. All right, so here's what we're going to do, Bri Guy. We're going to start off with our daily devotional. I'm very excited about these verses today. Really good verses. So hit me up with some, I don't know, I'm in the mood for like some Romans.

Can you hit me with some Romans? I would love to hit you with some Romans. I will hit you all with some Romans. We're on Romans 12, 2. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. The world is trying to grab us constantly.

Yeah. You know? It just feels like that. Sometimes it feels like a beatdown. Yeah, for sure. You're like in a fight. From the world. It's like, Right? Yeah. I like that idea, just the don't be conformed, you know, like instead transformed. Yeah. That's just, those are just powerful words. That idea of like, it is everywhere. You are going to get knocked down, like talks about that. But like, but you can, can allow yourself to go into a different mind space.

Yeah. Right. Yeah. And, and the protection of your mind too, you know, and this is a, you know, it's saying here uh about discernment and and the renewal of our minds and we're gonna talk all about that that today because today's about reprogramming your mind and how to renew your mind and and it's tough because because like i said i mean this is this is an attack yeah the world is like like got a bazooka yeah for sure you know and it's on auto fire and it's like You're just getting tang.

Yeah, right, yeah. So we've got to put up some defenses there, and we want to renew our mind. And I like this idea of the renewal of your mind being tested by what is the will of God. So it's like, you know, I talk a lot about spirit and listening for spirit. And I think this is sort of what I mean by that, is when you're listening to spirit, you you can discern if you if you ask just this simple question is this from god or not from god and then and then you kind of you know like you just know yeah you know absolutely you know you you just know you know yeah you know i mean i know i know i know yeah you just feel it it just Feels good. Yeah. So, so God is good. And what is, what is it? Here we go. What is the will of God? What is good and acceptable and perfect? You know, you know, I mean, I can tell you that when a baby's born, it's good and perfect. I've experienced it. I've seen it. I've watched it happen. It's perfect. That's, that's why I say, I believe that when you when a person is born and when a person dies the two times that we are closest to god on this earth because you're coming from one you know you're so close right you're so so perfect as a child um i mean i i obviously you're closer to god in the womb but but but you're you're not out of the womb yet so i'm assuming the first the first time we actually get to see god in action is that first breath it's interesting all right well let's uh let's hit up the next verse here we're gonna jump over to ephesians 4 22 through 24 i was like what to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put on the new self created after the likeness of god in true righteousness and holiness to put off your old self which belongs to the former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires so here's and this is something that that you know i talk about a lot which is accountability which is honesty which is truth which is being real with you and if you're not real with you you don't admit where you're coming from you don't admit who you are or what you've done or whatever um then then there's no starting point yeah so i think here when it's saying put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life which is corrupt through deceitful desires if you're not willing to admit that you've ever done anything wrong or you've ever yeah you know if you're not willing to admit it how could you ever be renewed yeah so I think that's part of it here um and then you want to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and and put on the new self the God self which is like God you know it says created after the likeness of God we all have that capability um in in true righteousness and holiness so um so so there's the there's the I think there's the first step, which is, let's say, accepting Christ.

The first step is the acceptance, the decision, let's call it, when you're going to say, I'm going to be renewed. And honestly, it happens at different times for different people and different aspects of their life. And then I think there's like a, there's another potential big shift that happens for a lot of people where they, they, they walk into it and they say, I'm going to allow my life to really be a reflection of this thing.

Yeah. Okay. And, and I am now in this third phase battling a third phase that is brand new to me, but I'm realizing it and I'm, and I'm seeing it right in this verse here to put off the old self. I actually am looking at this going, bro, this is daily. Yeah. The old self was yesterday. The new self is today. Yeah. And it's annoying when pastors say this, when they're like, we're all sinners.

We all sin. Because you're like, dang, like, stop it. I don't like talking about that. But then when you realize it's so true, you know, that I don't think we've ever, any of us, made it through an entire just one 24-hour period of being perfect. Right, yeah. Perfect in thought, perfect in desires, perfect in every aspect of a day. Like there's no such thing as a perfect day.

Right, yeah. Okay, so to say I'm going to shed my old self, that's literally daily. You've got to wake up and battle every day. Totally, totally. And that's the battle that I'm currently in right now is this daily reforming and the daily questioning and the daily trying to understand, like, where are we heading? Where am I heading? And how do I refine yesterday? How do I look for the little things, and how do I not get stuck in the traps?

Yeah. Well, the thing, the other thing that this verse really makes me think of is, is the idea of like, now, you know, you know, once you know, then you know, like a kid, let's say like they do something wrong and they never knew. Yeah. Now that they know, they have the knowledge of it and it's their choice whether or not they do it or don't do it.

It doesn't make it hard or easy or whatever. Like it's still a big challenge. But I think once you make this acceptance, you're also accepting, like you said, responsibility and understanding and going like, hey, if I do so, I know that it's wrong. I know. I know in my heart. I know that that's not where, again, God's leading me. And sometimes we do it anyway, right? But that's that idea of now you know.

It's an acceptance. It's an acceptance of like I'm willing to take responsibility. I'm willing to accept that I get this and I'm taking on the responsibility of what it means to be a reflection of that. Yeah, and even one of the pieces of knowledge that we may be blessed slash cursed with is the knowledge that there's always room to get better. And so it can feel like this daunting task.

It's this idea of daily reflection going, okay, like where am I culpable yesterday? Let me reflect on that. Let me pray on that. Let me be renewed into that. And, you know, I'll catch some slack maybe from people because I'm – and just to be clear here, I'm not talking about guilt. We should not be guilting ourselves. It's not about that. This is about the reforming of our spirit, the reforming of our hearts, and a desire to continue to get closer to God, to continue to go inward.

All right, so we've got a great show for you today. I'm very, very excited to talk about this idea of reprogramming your mind. So if we think about it, we've all been programmed in some way. We're programmed how to think, how to talk, how to be, you know, what to do, et cetera. And so from this programming, we can get stuck. And programming can be good or can be bad, right?

So, I mean, so we don't know 100% unless we begin to start questioning the programs that are running in our minds. And I like using the example of a child who takes a stick and smacks the dog. And one parent might say, don't smack the dog. That hurt the dog. The dog yelped. Don't do that. The child's been programmed, hey, I don't inflict pain. I'm being programmed that that's a bad thing.

Whereas another parent could belligerently then say, good job. That's funny. We praise you for smacking the dog. Smack the dog again and I'm going to laugh. And that child may have been programmed, right? Like same child with two different circumstances here. It could be programmed that this action is good or this action is bad. This action gives me a cookie or this action gives me a reprimand.

So we have to be very careful with the cookies that we are giving ourselves, and we need to be aware of the things that have been programmed inside of us. We can just stop it here if we choose to. So how are we programmed? We've got childhood programming, we've got news programming, television programming, movie programming, and then we've got God's programming. And ideally, we want to be leaning into God's programming.

We want to be leaning into the programming that is good, programming that is going to cause goodness inside of us. programming that's going to to be a reflection of goodness and and we know when we're doing it and we know when we're not doing it and so so today we're going to really dive into this idea of programming and how can we unprogram and reprogram and and really set ourselves up to be on a path toward a better state and I'm even just gonna say a better life really because because when you know you're in a state of goodness life becomes easier it feels easier it's not so heavy and i'm not talking about you're going to get rich overnight i'm not saying that but goodness does come and and and what does everybody really want at the end of the day you want peace you want to you want to hit the pillow and you want to feel a peaceful heart and that's the kind of programming we're talking about today so uh so in our first segment when we come back we're going to be talking about breaking through our limiting beliefs because we've been programmed with some limiting beliefs and we want to talk about how to break through those limiting beliefs then in our second segment today we're going to talk about how to become a master programmer so if you're if you're going to reprogram your mind you need to know how to do it so we're going to talk about that in the second segment and then in the in the third and final segment our quick takeaway we're going to talk about feeding the good and starving the bad because Because that's a big part of it is you've got to go, okay, not only do I need to reprogram, but I also need to make sure that I'm getting rid of some of the bad that's kind of like plaguing my subconscious.

And even though I'm putting good in, maybe a lot of it is being contradicted or a lot of it is being kind of knocked out. So we're going to talk about that in the quick takeaway at the end. Today, we're super stoked and it's packed. And tomorrow, Bri Guy, I know I'm on here, so I apologize for putting you on the spot, but we've got a guest tomorrow, yeah?

Yes, we do, yeah. Named Maddie. Maddie Madison. Maddie Madison. She goes by Maddie. It's Estevez, I think, right? Yeah. Madison Estevez. Awesome, awesome human being. So excited. She's an author. She has this amazing organization, Don't Disabilities. Yeah, Do Not Disabilities. We're going to have so much fun tomorrow. So you've got to tune in tomorrow. We've got a great guest. So anyway, we're excited for today, and we'll be right back after these messages.

all righty we are back here in our first segment breaking through the limiting beliefs today's all about reprogramming the mind and so where do limiting beliefs come from i think that's a really good first question and everybody has limiting beliefs all of us doesn't matter your upbringing we all do and and so the idea is like okay where do we get these beliefs from and and it's uh it's childhood we start and we're and we're taught certain things and we learn certain things and we we hold things to be absolute truths and so we have these beliefs that that are that are near and dear to our hearts and if anybody sort of crosses those beliefs with a with a different set of values it can feel like an attack like something offensive is happening right and and so we want to be very careful of how we've limited ourselves so somebody might say um you know i mean i heard i heard a kid say yesterday i'm not smart kid said that i mean it's a limiting belief i don't know where you heard that i told him this i was like i was like you can't well you're not allowed to say that he's like what if it's true and i go it's not true yeah right and you know what he said he goes oh like for real the kid was like oh i was like yeah it's not true yeah you are smart that's what i said and he's like oh okay like literally that's what happened it's awesome i'm talking about like a seven-year-old or eight-year-old this kid believed i'm i'm not smart i'm like uh negative i actually am smart yeah he's like he was he was like mind blown he's like really i'm like yeah really like don't say that crazy you're not a lot and you're Now let's say that in this room, you know, another kid said, I'm not funny.

He was trying to be funny. But kids do that all the time. He knew it was fun. Right. But, but exactly. And, and kids do it. Come on. Adults. Yeah. Come on. Everybody. And so, so what's interesting is I look at last night. I look at yesterday and the classes that we had, and this is how and why we do what we do actually. mentioned it in a couple of the showcases to the parents it's right on the website it's the very first thing on there is master your life through the craft of acting yeah okay there there are there's a lot of ways to make money there's a lot of ways to be successful and opening an acting studio in arizona ain't one of them facts you know what i mean and and we've we've developed a niche here for doing something very different than the expected. We've gone against the norm in our industry and in a lot of industries. And in the long run, we have been blessed for it. And I believe we are going to continue to be blessed for that point of view. I think right now is a challenging time for our point of view but i again believe long term there's going to be an avalanche of success but we have to stay true yeah true to our our values we have to stay open we have to be willing to listen we have to be um willing to help we have to be willing to sacrifice right now and and weirdly enough some people might be afraid to say what i said to that kid some people might be afraid to challenge ideals right now and ideas right now because any sort of a challenge of any kind seems to be getting like a lot of flack well you know me that ain't gonna stand in my classroom right you know i will literally take a shot from a parent if i have to to defend a kid you know and i'll be like hey what are you doing i'm like yeah because i think it's what's best for your kid yeah you know the other thing i think i said to the kids yesterday um i i i just love teaching bro it's like it's amazing it's so fun and and i got this you know i got this little wise and it's so interesting as the world is shifting and changing our program is growing and expanding in in all new ways that it that it hasn't even before which so it's like obviously new opportunities are coming to us and so there's this there's this um small group of kids that i just adore them but they're not easy that's probably why i adore them so much because there's a challenge like i talked to this one kid's mom after class but but and i just was bluntly honest with her in front of him because i was already bluntly honest with him and i looked him right in the eyes and i said i'm going to talk about you right in front of you you know i didn't talk about him i didn't talk down on him i talked honestly about him and i said i was like he was sitting on the chairs on a stack of chairs and he wouldn't come down your kid and we asked him to come down we were polite about it was like please come down come down what you know one of our team members had to call me in the room the kid won't come down i said come down he won't come down i wanted to pull my hair out why wouldn't you come down from the chairs what are you doing i like you don't like don't make me reprimand you please and then and then he hit the magic word he said why he doesn't know why it's like don't hit the dog don't hit the dog don't hit the dog why why not hit the dog because it hurts the dog oh right you are smart oh so she's like why don't I why not sit on the chairs I said because that breaks the chairs I don't let my own kids climb on there they want to too and I say no because it bends the chairs and it breaks the chairs yeah and we don't we don't want to ruin this place we love this place and he non-verbally agreed because he got down that quick interesting yeah you know it's a reprogramming of understanding why something's important and then this particular kid now because I know him he's uh he can be a tough cookie at times but he will when he understands the why he will defend it to the ends of the earth so now if another kid tried to get up there he would then tell them no and of course i gotta hold him back because he'd probably tug him off so uh so bri guy why don't we dive into your um your heart here for a second let you be vulnerable with our audience i always like doing that to you yeah especially on the spot it's my favorite time on the spot what do you what would you say would be a limiting belief that you've had or had or or have or whatever that that you're fighting with or have fought with that you have overcome or are in the process of overcoming sure um there's a couple uh honestly the the smart one comes back to me i've done that to myself multiple times with like my mind um and have to battle it constantly because like whatever memorization or whatever we're doing like i i just thought there was this thing inside of me that just feels like like i'm i'm not smart like i'm not like you know because of i whatever i didn't go to college or like all the bad choices that i've made that have made it so that it's harder or whatever like i've just told myself that and so So I have to remind myself that that's not true and that kind of just goes in with the smart just goes in with that.

So that's a small one and then a big one that I've had to deal with is like the with the Yeah, and it's a focus thing too. It's a where your eyes go or where your heart goes. Um, where, where, where your thoughts go, it's, it's that focus, right? So going back to smart, like, are you smart? Am I smart? Well, you've got to define what that is.

What is smart? Yeah. You know, there's a lot of people on TV that have Harvard degrees that I don't think are smart. As a matter of fact, I think a lot of them are jerks. You know, a lot of them I wouldn't want to hang out with. I wouldn't want to work with them. Sure. I wouldn't even want to have a coffee with them. And so then you have to ask yourself, okay, so, because truthfully, like, am I smart?

Really, it depends on what I'm comparing myself to. Right? So ideally, you're comparing you to you, and you can look into, well, also, where am I smart? Like for you in particular, you are exceptionally intelligent in emotional response and understanding and listening and connecting to human beings. I mean your emotional intelligence, and I call it IQ, like your emotional IQ is off the freaking charts. Your IQ, your smarts when it comes to building community, when it comes to understanding how to connect people together off the charts.

And so like we could take sports, we jump into sports for a second. I love basketball. I can tell you right away which teams are going to be good, like even like in a pickup game, you can see when guys have what I call basketball IQ. and it's not the same as skill so like there's some people are going to be better players than others and then there's some players that have basketball iq and the ones that have basketball iq are the ones that get the extra rebound they're the ones that make the extra pass they're the ones that shoot or don't shoot at the right time there's the one that they're the ones that that fall into the just that little tiny space where they're going to play defense and and help out in such a way that it's just so annoying for the other team yeah it's basketball all IQ now that person in a particular field is smarter than a lot of other people does that make them smart or dumb in any other field like not necessarily it's just like right we're all individuals so so I'm glad you brought that up because that's really neat for our kids to hear that even somebody like Brian that we all look up to and we look at and we're like wow we we we deal with these things constantly like like am I good enough am I smart enough you know and gosh Darn it, I like me.

I like me. You know what I mean? Yeah. All right, I'm going to have a few quotes here before we wrap this section up. This is Aristotle here. It says, it is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. What does that mean?

the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it i don't know to think about it but not like let it be the way it is that's right could be true that could be true that's interesting let me think about that i'm not accepting it but i'm not denying it yeah being open i'm able to entertain it That's huge for reprogramming our mind because if our mind is programmed into something, it's stuck.

It's stuck in a certain way. So I've been told, hey, this person is bad. This thing is bad. This whatever is bad. I've been told that, but I haven't experienced it. Like this is one of my major rules in life is like we're going to talk about don't judge a book by its cover tomorrow actually. But I believe in don't judge a person until you've met them.

So many people want to judge other human beings, and you're four, five, six away from them. And you're judging somebody based off of four or five other people's opinions, and you have no idea what those people, like what their motive is for dissing somebody else. So if I say – if no one's met Brian before and I say Brian's a great guy or Brian's a loser and you hold me, you're like, oh, I think Matt knows what he's talking about.

So I'm either going to think Brian's a great guy or he's a loser just based on what Matt said. That's a mistake. Yeah. You know, you could entertain the idea. Brian might be a great guy. He might be a loser. Might be. I'm going to entertain it, you know, but I'm not going to accept it. Right. That's – I think this is profound. We've got another quote here from Brian Tracy.

It says, The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire, not things we fear. And you just hit that with your help. Focus our conscious mind on things we desire, not things we fear. So, again, where's our heart? Where's our eyes? Where's our focus? Because where those things are, we're going to go. We're going to drift to that way. it fast it sure does all right so we talked about where our limiting beliefs originate from um we talked about um just just this idea of being willing to question our beliefs because if we're not willing to question our beliefs we cannot reprogram them you got to be willing to question the program to make sure that it's the programming that you want right now and honestly you may program something and then you may reprogram and you may reprogram and you may reprogram that's okay that's okay but you got to look at it you got to be honest with it and you got to be willing to question the program that's currently going on in your mind all right when we come back here we're gonna be talking about becoming a master programmer so as you start to program what goes in there let's talk about all the programs are going and how do you become a master programmer of your own mind talk about that them look good ideally.

Blast off. All right, welcome back, everybody. We are going to fly here. I've got an audition this morning, so I've got to kind of zip-a-dee, zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-day. My, oh, my, what a wonderful day. Plenty of sunshine coming my way. Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-day. Good, now we just got copywritten. Great. All right. Woo. All right, so we're going to become a master programmer. I'm going to jump right into a couple quotes here.

This is from Earl Nightingale. It says, whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality. I'll repeat that because that is exactly this section. There's almost nothing else needs to be said. Yeah, yeah. So we'll expand upon this. All right, so here comes the commercial. Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.

that's the program the program is the repetition so what so what happened what do we get programmed into us what am i programming into my kids right now you brush your teeth in the morning you brush your teeth at night you brush your teeth in the morning you brush your teeth at night okay um but at least that's what my parents programmed to me brush teeth in the morning brush teeth at night guess what they didn't know to tell me to take it easy when i brush So they programmed it in.

I hacked away at my gums. I have sensitive teeth now because I brushed too hard for most of my life, thinking I was going to get away all that plaque by just tearing into my – Sham in there, yeah. Okay, and all right, I didn't know that. So now I'm reprogramming myself. I have to actually be cautious. I've watched videos on this, And one guy's trick was like only hold the toothbrush with two fingers because then you don't have as much strength and power to hurt your gums.

That's a very interesting idea, this reprogramming. Who would have thought I would need to reprogram that? Nobody. You know what I mean? Yeah, right. It seems like an obvious thing that you would never need to reprogram, but here we go. I've got to reprogram that. So you put this into your subconscious. You plant it. Okay, and I like this idea of plant. So to become a master programmer, you got to know what the program is going to do.

So you should be looking ahead and go, okay, if I do this every day on repeat, what do I think is going to happen? Or if I look and go, okay, what have I been doing? And what is this one thing that I do that I've been doing on repeat? And what's the outcome? Like what's the program goes and it does its thing. And it's like, ah, okay, that happens.

Great. Someone else does this, that happens. I wonder if I do this, and this is where the master programming comes in. It's the, I wonder if. I'm curious. I wonder if I started doing this, what would happen? Then you experiment, and you start to build a program that works for you, your body, your mind, your life, for what you want. And diving into what Joey said yesterday, then you get to take accountability, because you look into it, and you go, I did this.

To me, I am where I am because of me, cool, but it opens me up to, all right, I have so many possibilities. It doesn't mean that, like, everything's going to be all rosy. It just means that I have some ability to script out my life, and I can set programming and put things on autopilot that are going to work for me for the things I want to do.

Yeah. There was a guy that said, I just listened to this yesterday. This idea of – oh, it was one of the Stoics. Actually, I'm reading a book on the Stoics right now, and it was this idea of we lie to ourselves. We tell ourselves that things are so hard, like hard to do, but it's not true. It's just we say it. We tell ourselves that something's hard, but then when you – when push comes to shove, then you realize the thing I'm telling myself isn't true.

And so the idea is to test those things and make sure that the programming, which is your thought life, that the programming is accurate or that you test it. You should always be testing the programming, right? Yeah. If you're not testing it, then you don't know what's going on in there. Right. So we got this idea. Okay, take this, right? I like this one. the guy was like all right so um so my baker my favorite baker makes this beautiful delicious bread okay so good and then the baker runs out of bread and i'm like yeah i'm just gonna wait i'm not gonna you know i'm not gonna go buy this other bread it's like cheaper bread you know it's not as good i don't i don't really want that other kind of bread i i don't i only eat this stuff that's all i eat okay cool then wait three weeks of starvation and let's see how much you love and enjoy the the the old crusty bread that you find under a trash can and how grateful you are for that piece of bread that crumb of bread and your body craves it and says thank you lord that's that's programming that's understanding of like what's true and what's not true what am i telling myself and and and understanding what gratitude really is what it really looks like yeah you know totally all right i got another quote here from uh john addison says you've got to win in your mind before you win in your life so true um i want to talk about viruses in the next section i know i have it written here but i think it's going to be good for the next section cool so um so so how do you program yourself for your life desire you got to know what you desire you got to know what you really want and then you got to be very clear about the core of it like i said in the beginning here we're not going to tell you how to be rich i i can guarantee you good things are going to come to you you probably will be rich by the way i'm just not going to guarantee it like if you continue to do good good things are going to happen this is the way it is i i know this to be true it's one of those laws of life if you focus on the good good things are going to happen if you focus on wealth prosperity you're going to get wealth and prosperity definitely but what do you really want what is wealth you got to define that you know like why do i want the money why do i why do i desire it for what for what purpose probably for peace probably for that that sense of like uh so how could you have that uh right now and that's what you want to start programming is this idea of i can be rich i can be wealthy i can i can be everything i want right now i don't have to look at what i don't have i can actually focus on what i do have and i can feel all the love and joy and excitement of what it is to be alive right now and i program that into my life consciously and then i repeat it so that it happens in the subconscious level and i wake up with joy and gratitude and love and and and connectedness to our father and and that's where you can live a joyful peaceful life and and be able to withstand the ups and downs of what this world is going to throw at you yeah absolutely all right we're going to jump uh into commercial here really quick and we're going to end with our last segment our quick takeaway is going to be feed the good and starve the bad we're We're going to talk about those viruses that attack our mind.

Coming up after this. Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Sure appreciate that. All right. We are on our final segment here. Feed the good, starve the bad. And I want to say something kind of funny here. Brian just said something during the break. He was like, hey, man, good shortening of that last segment. You should always pretend like you got a gig.

Yeah. But what is that? Think about this. It's reprogramming. Lies. It's not lies. No, he said you should pretend. It's not a lie. He didn't say you should lie to the audience. He said you should pretend. So in other words, he's like, hey, whatever you did that worked, it worked here. You put something in your mind that shortened the segment. He's like, I thought it was good.

Yeah. And he's like, because that's good, maybe we should repeat that. Repetition, reprogram. I mean, that's really cool. That's an interesting thing. Yeah, I didn't think of it that way. All right, so I'm going to jump right into the quotes here. Of course, my man, Napoleon Hill. Yeah. Love this quote. He's like, the godfather of motivation is just like that. There's a couple of things I'm going to do.

He says, whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve. I mean, that's why he's the Godfather. That's why. That's why. Whatever your mind can achieve and believe it can achieve. That's right. That's good. Except you got the words mixed up. I know. I realize that. Yeah. One day, you're going to do something to me. Yeah? All right. And the other quote I have here is from Roy Bennett.

It says, the more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, the more you can attract great things into your life. Well, it's so true. Facts. You plant the good, you plant the positive, you're going to get positive back out. All right, so I promised we were going to talk about feeding the good, starving the bad. So we're going to go with starving the bad first, okay? And I like this analogy, the idea of a computer virus, okay?

what does a virus do to your computer it attacks it it attacks it where when how um slowly cookies slowly yeah yeah when how you never know you never know and a lot of times it's happening not where you can see it it's happening behind the scenes right yeah it's running and it's it's it's like taking up the computer's memory and it's taking up the computer's energy and it's and it's It's like bogging down the things you want to do that are good, and then it's throwing you pop-up ads when you don't want them, when it's distracting you, right?

And it hits you when you didn't see it coming, and then it's like, ah, this virus. Like I can't get rid of this virus, and it keeps pulling me in the direction I don't want it to go. But the main thing is that it's happening behind the scenes. Yeah. Yeah, you know, a virus exists in a place that's planted so that it can attack you whenever it wants, when you least expect it, and you don't know it's there.

Because if you knew it was there, you'd get rid of it. Right. If you knew how to get rid of it, it was easy, you'd do it. But that's not how a virus works. Right. A virus comes in and it plants itself, and then it waits, and then it spreads slowly. You know, and it attacks here and it attacks there, and it kind of just builds. And that's how a computer virus works.

where our mind is like a computer, and we're programming our mind, and we allow viruses in. And the virus then will repeat itself, and it will send you down certain pathways, and you know them. You know what they are for you. And this repetitious, you know, just beating of yourself and this repetitious of going down into the negative, it happens over and over and over and over again, and you've got to fight the virus.

You have to literally kick it out. Yeah. It's like a battle. That's right. I mean, you just like your sword is is your positive thoughts. Right. And again, everybody's different. So if you get honest, you'll know what yours are. Totally. You'll know, OK, this is something that gets me down a certain track. So when that happens, I need to do this. Right. I need to call Matt and call Joey. I need to whatever like the things are for the specific thing. Right. And I and I believe, you know, and I've talked about this a lot, but I think one of the best things you can do when you've got a virus running is to talk about like bring it to the surface.

don't let it keep existing down here and so many of us just bury it we don't talk about it we pretend like it's not happening and then it's like okay well cool but you're running a virus and if you're not careful that virus infects everybody yep yeah everybody around you now is infected by your virus because you're not willing to deal with it mm-hmm so call me confrontational all you want my I believe it's this self-love and it's and it's love of the people around you by dealing with it by bringing it up and being honest about what's going on with you. How do we handle a computer virus? You know, how do we fix it when things are going wrong? It's, it's, you know, sometimes it's as easy as you turn off the computer and you turn it back on. It's like, that's weird. Like the, you know, the, the browser wasn't working. Let me just try turning it off and turning it back on. I'm going to reset really quick. Yeah. Cool. I did that this morning. I asked Joey to go through the football. He was like, no it's too cold and i want to eat and i'm like cool but i i needed it i wanted to reset that's why we throw the football sometimes so so i just walked outside and came back in i went out there took some breaths and i found something that i wanted to talk about when i came back in by going outside and separating myself from the space but by going in the cold on purpose yeah i actually wanted the cold because i wanted to reset i wanted to shock my system and change to get into a new frame of mind yeah okay so sometimes you gotta turn off the computer and turn it back on um we've talked about this already but you you gotta clean out an old virus you gotta do the work to clean it out you gotta go find it so so something's bothering me something's hurting me something's dragging me down i feel it i know it i can't put my finger on it well guess what you got work to do you gotta go figure out what is sucking up all your energy what is the root of it instead of just getting rid of like the surface stuff you got to go deep deep deep deep deep find the root of the virus and get rid of that sucker um another another thing is uh a lot of times you'll have to just take it in and get it repaired yeah you know you got you got to go and get help yeah sometimes for some of these viruses they're so bad and you and you let it get out of control you didn't deal with it for long enough it's taking over your computer you need an expert come in and help you with that yeah and that's where you know you want to you want to put yourself in classes with other people you want to put yourself in acting classes put yourself in in workout class classes you know exercise you want to take yourself to a therapist like like you want to go and say you know what i need help i i can't i can't either i can't or i just don't want to do this by myself it's too big of a thing so that's that's interesting and it's important okay it goes back to that like i'm not smart enough or i'm not this enough i'm not that enough well guess what a good coach is going to help you reframe that mind gonna help you change that programming yeah you know if i say oh i could never lift that much weight if i go to if i go if i go to any physical trainer they would never let me say that they would never let me say if they're good i can't do that they might say like hey right now you're not capable but it doesn't mean you you can't i mean you could it's just a matter of like we got to work at it and if you want if that's something you want we can do it or reprogram your mind help you understand of course you could do it just a matter how bad you want it yeah absolutely tony robbins i think isn't it can't is just can with the t at the end yeah that's right that's right um all right and then uh the last thing when it comes to these viruses how to starve out the bad is um once you've done that i guess let's just say this okay but once that once that's done you've starved out the bad all right then what do you what do we do sometimes you know what the we we put up firewalls we add protection that's important so once you've starved out the virus don't think that you're immune to the next virus of course you're you're you're definitely susceptible so you got to put up some firewalls for yourself you got to put up absolute like just like protection measures for you to protect you from whatever that virus is whatever that negative thought pattern is and like you said that might be calling a friend that might be doing whatever whatever you do but know what those firewalls are and ideally they're triggered by something like you can trigger the firewall to go nope yeah sorry satan get out you just got hit by jesus firewall dog um that's that's uh that's a good idea there um all right so then then how do we feed the good and i and i mentioned this earlier but this is uh this is a very quick easy lesson you got to update you got to stay curious you got to look at your programming and you should be constantly working on repeating the good and and refining the program how does a computer run faster how does a program run faster this is a term in technology they they clean the code so something that something that takes them let's say a thousand digits if they can figure out a way to do the same command with like 25 instead of a thousand it runs faster because it doesn't have to go through all that junk to get to what it really needs to do so then the whole thing speeds up so you'll see on your devices all the time there are these updates why because they're cleaning out the code they're updating their firewalls they're they're they're constantly updating the software if you don't update the software on your computer what happens it becomes irrelevant you can't even operate anymore so you've got to be willing to update your software should be something that you're doing all the time every day and that's what i was telling you is my fight this morning i was realizing that this is a this such a daily battle Yeah. To be looking at how do I refine yesterday and get better today? How do I refine yesterday, get better today? And, and, and then finding a program for myself and firewalls that helped me do that consistently and easier. So like the, the new program I want to program in is to reprogram daily, you know, and that's, that's, that's, that's the interesting thing. I was even thinking about it. I'm like, this is kind of cool because we added daily devotional.

now we're digging deep into the bible here during this hour i still i haven't stopped my my daily devotional at home when i wake up so i'm like dude you just double down double down you double down the stuff you know is good for you good job what else can you do how else can you continue to refine yeah uh question yourself without the guilt see when when the when the guilt triggers that's a virus i don't want that what's triggering the guilt get rid of that okay but but at the same time do i want to get better do i want to refine do i want to be a better version of me of course of course i do so you you keep reprogramming you keep updating your software to the latest greatest best version of you not somebody else think about this what happens if i try to put if i try to update a uh a mac computer with a windows software you are screwed it's not gonna work yeah It's just going to get going, I don't understand.

I don't compute that. Yeah, you're not software and I'm blind. Control-Alt-Delete versus Command-Shift-Escape. Like, they're totally different. Totally different. But I'm talking about you're trying to take the operating software from Windows and go, oh, look, it's a brand-new software. It's Windows 27, and I want to put it on my Mac, and I'm just going to grab it and just go. It won't go. It won't run. And that's what a lot of us try to do is we try to run other people's software on our machine.

Yeah. Instead, we've got to update our own software. Yep. Dang, bro. Dang. Just laying down some knowledge this morning. I'm feeling that. All right. We love you guys. That is our show. Thank you so much. I'm going to go hit up my personal audition with my family. It's going to be so cute. And I'm up, baby. God bless. Thanks for listening to Mornings with Matt.
