Carol’s kids were students here before she was; they did private lessons because the weekly schedule didn’t fit around school. She’s a flight attendant with Southwest Airlines, and after a long stretch of days in a row she wanted something that wasn’t the job. She had no acting experience and every reason to hesitate. She took her first class in 2015 and has been training ever since, and what she’s built in those years isn’t a résumé. It’s confidence, drive and a fearlessness that shows up at work and at home. Here’s her Dearing Story.
In Carol’s words
How were you introduced to the studio?
“Through my kids. They couldn’t take weekly classes because of scheduling, so they started with private lessons. My job can get repetitive. I was working a lot of days in a row and I wanted to do something different, and it was like my car just drove itself into the parking lot.”
What was the first class like?
“I was so outside my comfort zone. Everyone was so welcoming as soon as I got in the door. You asked us why we were awesome, and I said I was awesome because I showed up. It was such a positive and fun night.”
How has the training affected your life and your work?
“You learn so many things here. Of course you learn about the craft of acting, but you learn other things, like overcoming your fears, becoming more confident. I am more fearless.”
She was awesome because she walked in. Ten years later, that’s still the whole entry requirement.
